Historic York

York, a compact walled city divided by the River Ouse which runs right through its heart, is steeped in history and can trace its roots back 2,000 years to the Romans, Vikings and Medieval kings and Princes of Christian England. The whole city is a living monument to a justifiably proud era. World-class attractions, museums and galleries are testimony to a glorious past. The Gothic splendour of York Minster and the ruins of the ancient Castle are unparalleled outside of the Capital. The Bar Walls of York are not only the finest and most complete of any town in England, they are also the longest. Not that you’d notice. The two hours it takes to walk them disappears as you are engrossed in the experience.

Whilst York has one foot proudly in the past the other is firmly in the present.
